The construction industry is one of the largest contributors to global carbon emissions — but it’s also one of the most exciting frontiers for sustainable innovation. Whether you’re designing a high-rise, renovating a home, or speccing out an interior fit-out, the materials you choose have a real impact on the planet. The good news? There’s never been a wider range of high-performance, eco-friendly options to work with. Here’s a look at six materials worth knowing.

Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT)

Cross-laminated timber is engineered wood made by stacking and bonding layers of solid timber at right angles. It’s strong, dimensionally stable, and — crucially — it stores carbon rather than releasing it. Sourced from responsibly managed forests, CLT can replace concrete and steel in structural applications, dramatically reducing a building’s embodied carbon. It’s particularly well-suited to mid-rise residential and commercial buildings, and its warm aesthetic makes it a favourite for exposed structural elements in interiors.

Recycled Steel

Steel is one of the most recycled materials on earth, and for good reason. Producing steel from recycled scrap uses around 75% less energy than making it from raw ore. It retains all the structural properties of virgin steel — strength, flexibility, and durability — making it a straightforward swap in most structural applications. For architects and contractors, specifying recycled steel content in beams, columns, and reinforcement is one of the simplest ways to reduce a project’s environmental footprint without compromising performance.

Bamboo

Don’t let its reputation as a craft material fool you — bamboo is a serious structural and finishing option. It grows extraordinarily fast (some species mature in three to five years), sequesters carbon efficiently, and regenerates without replanting. Engineered bamboo products like laminated bamboo lumber offer strength comparable to hardwood, making them viable for flooring, cladding, cabinetry, and even structural framing in lighter applications. It performs especially well in tropical and subtropical climates, though engineered forms are increasingly used worldwide.

Hempcrete

Hempcrete is a bio-composite material made from the woody core of the hemp plant mixed with a lime binder. It’s lightweight, breathable, and has excellent thermal mass — meaning it absorbs and releases heat slowly, reducing the energy needed for heating and cooling. Hempcrete is carbon-negative over its lifecycle, as the hemp plant absorbs more CO₂ during growth than is released during processing. It’s best used as insulation and infill in wall systems rather than as a load-bearing material, making it a smart choice for residential walls and renovation projects where thermal performance is a priority.

Reclaimed Wood

Reclaimed wood is salvaged timber from old buildings, barns, factories, and other structures — given a second life rather than ending up in landfill. Because no new trees are felled and no new processing energy is required, its embodied carbon footprint is extremely low. Beyond sustainability, reclaimed wood brings character: aged grain, nail holes, and weathered patinas that simply can’t be replicated. It’s widely used in flooring, feature walls, furniture, and joinery, and it’s a go-to material for designers looking to add warmth and authenticity to a space.

Recycled Glass

Recycled glass is finding its way into a growing range of building products — from countertops and tiles to insulation and aggregate in concrete mixes. Manufacturing glass from cullet (crushed recycled glass) uses significantly less energy than producing it from raw silica, and it diverts waste from landfill. In interior design, recycled glass tiles and surfaces offer a distinctive, translucent aesthetic that works beautifully in kitchens, bathrooms, and feature walls. In structural applications, glass aggregate can improve concrete’s thermal properties while reducing its environmental impact.

Sustainable materials are no longer a niche consideration — they’re becoming the baseline expectation for responsible design and construction. The six materials above represent a practical starting point, but the field is evolving fast. Staying informed, asking suppliers the right questions, and pushing for transparency in material sourcing are habits that will serve any design or construction professional well in the years ahead.
